Course Description

Day 1: Mastering IFRS 17 and the Building Block Approach
Begin with a deep dive into IFRS 17 principles. This includes a comprehensive exploration of the Building Block Approach (BBA), fulfilment cash flows, and estimation methods. Discuss risk adjustment, contractual service margin, onerous contracts, and loss components. The day also covers the distribution of Contractual Service Margin (CSM) and the unlocking of CSM. Additionally, participants will explore initial recognition, subsequent measurements, and changes, as well as insights into separating components in financial statements. Group case studies will be conducted, focusing on practical applications.

Day 2: Implementing PAA, VFA, and Reinsurance Contracts
The day begins with understanding and implementing the Premium Allocation Approach (PAA) and Variable Fee Approach (VFA). Participants will learn the requirements and execution strategies for these approaches, followed by group case studies for practical application. Techniques for modelling cash flow projections and comparing best estimate assumptions (stochastic vs deterministic approaches) will be covered. The session continues with an analysis of the differences between Solvency II cash flows and IFRS 17, understanding risk adjustment quantification, and amortization patterns. Discussions will include the variance from the Solvency II risk margin. The day concludes with a session on presentation and disclosure, providing participants with a thorough understanding of how to effectively communicate financial information under IFRS 17.

Day 3: Reinsurance Contracts, Processes, and Transition Strategies
Day three starts with a session on accounting methods for reinsurance contracts, analysing the impact and differences compared to insurance contracts. Participants will navigate discounting and actuarial processes, exploring the relationship between risk processes and accounting systems. The day continues with managing contracts with participation features and effective transition strategies to IFRS 17. The day ends with group case studies to reinforce learning through practical application.

Day 4: Transition Strategies, Risk Management, and Regulatory Compliance
Effective strategies for transitioning to IFRS 17 are covered on day four. The focus will be on strategies for effective risk management under IFRS 17, addressing asset-liability mismatches, and understanding the impacts on embedded value, economic capital, and enterprise-wide risk.
